Bump Photo Ideas: Outfits, Locations, and Light

A good bump photo comes down to three decisions: what to wear, where to stand, and what the light is doing. Make them once, early, and every photo afterward takes thirty seconds. That speed is the real secret: the bump series that matters is the one you kept taking, week after week, with the phone that was already in your hand.

Outfits: make the bump easy to read

Fitted beats flowy. A snug, solid-color top or dress shows the curve clearly; a loose print swallows it, especially early on when the change is subtle. Turn side-on to the camera, because the profile is where the story is. The strongest move is a uniform: one fitted tank, dress, or shirt you wear in every weekly photo, so the only thing changing from frame to frame is you. If a uniform sounds dull, keep the base layer constant and vary what goes over it, an open shirt one week, a denim jacket the next. Later on, the classic lifted-hem shot with unbuttoned jeans reads timeless in a way trendier outfits never will, and by then comfort has become the main styling criterion anyway.

Locations: one anchor, then wildcards

Pick a single anchor spot you can return to every week, a doorway or a stretch of plain wall. Repetition is the point; when the background holds still, growth becomes visible. Then let the rest of the week’s photos wander. The kitchen mid-recipe, the garden, the desk, the favorite walking route: those frames age into time capsules of the life this baby is about to join. The most underrated wildcard is the nursery in progress. Stand in it every few weeks and let the crib and the pile of flat-pack boxes slowly assemble themselves behind you.

Light: the flattering kind is free

Nearly everything a phone camera struggles with is really a light problem, and the fix costs nothing. Stand near a big window, out of direct sun, with your body angled about forty-five degrees toward it: soft window light wraps around the bump and keeps skin looking like skin. For something more dramatic, stand side-on directly in front of the window and let yourself go dark against the bright glass, a silhouette that hides tired eyes and shows the curve perfectly. Outdoors, overcast days and the hour before sunset are the kind ones. The two lights to avoid are overhead bathroom fixtures and the flash.

The part that outlasts the outfit

A bump photo without its week number loses half its meaning within a year, because the week is the caption: week 16 looked like nothing, week 31 looked like everything. Label as you go and keep the series in one place; a pregnancy photo journal files each photo on its own week for you, which is how a casual habit turns into the first chapter of the baby book. If a stray photo has lost its week, the pregnancy week calculator recovers it from your due date in a second.

And hand the phone over sometimes. You belong in this series at full length, not just as a mirror reflection, and the person who usually takes the photos belongs in a few of them too.
