First Year Photo Checklist, Month by Month
The first year produces thousands of photos and, somehow, gaps. You were shooting the whole time; you were just shooting the same five things: face, face, sleeping face, face with relative, face. A checklist is just a nudge toward the shots that do not occur to you in the moment, which are exactly the ones you go hunting for later.
Months 0 to 3
The front door, from outside, on the day you bring them home: the least glamorous, most time-stamped photo of the year. The tiny details before they change: folded ears, peeling hands, the fists, the impossibly small fingernails. The 3am shift, one parent and one baby in lamplight, unposed and a little wrecked. The nursery while it is still tidy, because it will never look like the plan again. And each parent holding the baby, deliberately, because one of you is probably always the photographer; we wrote about getting the camera-holder into the photos for a reason.
Months 4 to 6
The first real laugh wants to be video, not a photo; keep the phone rolling longer than feels natural. Hands discovering feet, a fascination that gets weeks of daily attention and then vanishes forever. The beginning of the favorite-object era, whatever object wins. Bath hair. And the high chair debut, followed closely by the high chair aftermath, which is a different and better photograph.
Months 7 to 9
This is the motion era, and blurry is allowed; a sharp photo of a baby who never moved is less true than a smeared one mid-lunge. Photograph how they get around, whatever form that takes, from floor level, camera on the ground. The reach for something forbidden. The grocery cart seat, and the ever-expanding mess radius. If you keep only technically perfect shots from this stretch, you will have very few, and they will all be of a stationary baby who did not exist.
Months 10 to 12
Standing at the furniture, hands gripping the couch cushion like a ledge. First shoes, photographed next to yours. The newborn going-home outfit held up against them, which is the single cheapest special-effects shot in photography. The night before the first birthday, asleep, one day old times three hundred sixty-five. And the birthday morning before any guests arrive, while the kitchen still looks hopeful.
All year long
Two threads run through every month. The first is the constant: one photo in the same spot, every month, however you stage it; if you want prompts for what else to catch in any given month, there are baby photo ideas organized by month. The second is the firsts, and the firsts do not read checklists. Rolling, sitting, crawling, walking: each arrives on your baby’s own schedule, and questions about timing are for your pediatrician, not a blog. The photographer’s job is only to be ready whenever it comes, which is what a baby milestone tracker is for: a running list of moments waiting for their photo, none of them assigned to a month.
Twelve months from now, the checklist photos will be the connective tissue between the portraits: the door, the lamplight, the shoes, the outfit that shrank. That is the year, more than the faces ever were.
