The trade
A clean copy also forgets when it was taken.
The location, the date, and the camera name all sit in the same small block of hidden text. Take one out and they all go. That is the right trade for a photo heading somewhere public, and the wrong one for a photo heading into your family album, where the date is what puts a memory in its place.
So the order matters. If the photo is old, or it is the only copy you have, look at the date first with the private photo date checker and note it down. Then clean the copy you are actually sending, and keep the original as it is.
There is also a third way through. Most of the worry about hidden location data comes from sharing photos somewhere the file itself can travel. If what you really want is for the grandparents to see the pictures, a private timeline is a calmer answer than a stripped file on a public feed. Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser does all of it. The file is read on your device, the clean copy is drawn on your device, and nothing — not the photo, not the filename, not the coordinates — is sent to Our Pear Tree or any other service. Closing the page clears it.
Does removing metadata change how the photo looks?
No. Every pixel stays exactly where it is. Only the hidden fields wrapped around the picture are dropped. The clean copy is written as a JPEG at high quality, so a PNG comes back as a JPG and the file is re-compressed very slightly, which is invisible on a normal photo.
Why does location data matter when I share photos of my kids?
Most phones record where a photo was taken, often within a few meters, and that reading stays inside the file. That is fine while the file is yours. It matters when the file itself travels: emailed as an attachment, dropped in a shared folder, or forwarded on. Whoever ends up holding it can read the coordinates of your home, your daycare, or your hospital room. Big social apps usually strip this on upload, but attachments and download links usually do not.
Does cleaning a photo remove the capture date too?
Yes. The date lives in the same block of hidden data, so a clean copy no longer knows when it was taken. If the photo is old, or the only copy you have, check the date before you clean it and write it down. Check a photo’s date first
Which photo formats work?
The check reads JPG, HEIC and HEIF from an iPhone, PNG, and WebP — the metadata every camera and phone writes. The clean copy is created by your browser, which is why it always comes back as a JPEG.
