Two adults a couple of steps apart on the rug, and you on the floor to the side with the camera at knee height. Photograph the middle of the journey rather than the arrival — arms out, one foot up, a face full of nerve. Shoot a burst; it lasts about a second.
Away from the camera
Let her go and photograph her leaving: down the hallway, across the grass, into the next room. Stay low and let the doorway or the path frame her. It is the photo that will look most like this year when you find it again.
Boots in a puddle
Wellies, a shallow puddle, and no plans for the next twenty minutes. Crouch down at splash height a safe distance back and shoot into the light so the drops go bright. Take the frame just after the foot lands, not as it goes up.
The wagon or the trolley
If he pushes a walker, a toy trolley, or a wagon, photograph from directly in front at his height as it comes toward you, hands high on the handle. Do it outside or in the widest bit of floor you have. Everything about the posture says departure.
Books in a pile
Photograph the daily pile: books pulled off the shelf and spread out, one being held up to somebody. Sit at the far side of the pile with the lamp or window behind you. Include the shelf they came from so the scale of the operation is clear.
Bedtime, book and blanket
In the low light of the bedroom, hold the phone steady against the doorframe and photograph the last book of the day: a parent's arm, a head leaning in, one lamp. Do not fight the grain. Warm and soft is exactly what that hour looks like.
