10 months old: photos worth taking.

Month ten is a good month to go outside. Late afternoon light is soft and forgiving, a park bench is a perfectly good studio, and the walk to the corner is an event. Indoors, follow the emptying of drawers, which is a full-time occupation now.

Month 10

Things worth photographing this month.

  • Two fingers held

If she is walking with someone holding on, photograph from in front and low: two small hands wrapped around two adult fingers, feet mid-step, faces optional. Get the camera down to knee height. It is the hands that make it, so give them the middle of the frame.

  • The kitchen drawer

Let the safe drawer be emptied and photograph the aftermath from a step back — tea towels on the floor, one hand still in the drawer, an entirely satisfied face. Shoot with the kitchen window on one side. Do not tidy first; the mess is the memory.

  • The park bench

Sit him on a bench with a parent beside him, and photograph from a couple of steps away in open shade or late light. Include the whole bench so the size difference is obvious. The same bench next spring is a photo you will thank yourself for.

  • Snack cup on the step

The doorstep, a cup, a handful of something, and a lot of concentration. Sit on the ground opposite and shoot at his level with the house behind you. Ordinary outdoor eating photographs better than any arranged picnic.

  • The shoe box

If first shoes have turned up, photograph them before they are worn: on the floor by the front door, next to a parent's shoes, in plain daylight from above. Then take one of them actually on, mid-step. The pair together is the scale.

  • Golden hour on the pavement

In the last hour of daylight, put the sun behind her on the path or the lawn and shoot low into the light, so the hair goes bright at the edges. Tap the face on your screen so it does not go dark. This is the one hour when a phone camera looks expensive.

  • Ten months in the chair

Same chair, same spot, and it may take two adults now. Toy in hand, one frame, done. Two to go.

When you have the photo

Turning this month into a keepsake.

The milestone photo maker adds the age and prints at 4 × 6, 5 × 7, or 8 × 10, and the monthly photo collage maker is two months from being ready for the whole set.

The milestone photo maker reads the birth date and the photo date, writes the exact age onto the picture, and lets you drag everything into place before downloading it for sharing or printing. The monthly photo collage maker holds twelve squares, one for each month of the year, and gives you a print-ready page at the end of it. All of them run in your browser, so the photos never leave your device.

Every photo, filed at the age it happened.
