9 months old: photos worth taking.
Nine months brings noise and travel: along the sofa, around the coffee table, into the cupboard with the pans in it. Photograph the edges of rooms this month, because that is where everything is happening. Stand back a little further than you have been and let some of the house into the frame.
Month 9
Things worth photographing this month.
Cruising the sofa
Sit on the floor at one end of the sofa with the camera at cushion height and photograph her working her way along the front of it, hands flat on the seat. Let the whole length of the sofa into the frame so the journey shows. The determined side profile is better than any face-on shot here.
Standing at the window
When he pulls up at the windowsill, get low and behind him so the daylight makes an outline around his head and the little hands are up on the sill. Include the frame of the window for shape. Keep an adult in reach without them ending up in the picture.
Pots and a wooden spoon
Open the pan cupboard, hand over a wooden spoon, and photograph the racket from the kitchen doorway with the room's daylight behind you. Take a wide frame that includes the open cupboard, then one close one of the spoon mid-swing. Noise photographs surprisingly well.
Nine months in, nine months out
Find a bump photo from around the same point in the pregnancy and take a new one this month in the same spot, if you have it — same wall, same distance, same time of day. If there is no bump photo, use a newborn frame from month one instead. Two frames, one place, a year apart in feeling.
The hat that will not stay on
Photograph the small ongoing argument between a sunhat and a head: on, off, thrown, retrieved. Shoot from just below eye level outdoors in open shade, or by a window inside. Take the frame where the hat is halfway to the floor.
Crawling toward the camera
Sit on the floor at the far side of the room, put something interesting just behind you, and photograph her arriving. Keep the camera at her head height throughout — this is not a photo you take standing up. The one where she is close enough to reach the lens is usually the keeper.
Nine months in the chair
Same chair, same spot, and by now the chair looks smaller than it did in month one. Take the frame fast, before he climbs down. Three left after this.
When you have the photo
Turning this month into a keepsake.
Keep going: the milestone photo maker labels each chair frame with the exact age, and the monthly photo collage maker will lay all twelve out on one page when you get there.
The milestone photo maker reads the birth date and the photo date, writes the exact age onto the picture, and lets you drag everything into place before downloading it for sharing or printing. The monthly photo collage maker holds twelve squares, one for each month of the year, and gives you a print-ready page at the end of it. All of them run in your browser, so the photos never leave your device.
Every photo, filed at the age it happened.
