Month two is when the awake stretches get long enough to work with, and a face becomes the easiest subject in the house. You barely have to move anybody. Pick the calm hour after a feed, stay near one window, and let the camera wait rather than chase.

The long look
Lay the baby on a blanket with the window at her side, then lie down yourself so the camera is at her eye level rather than above her. Talk, wait, and take the frame when she finds your face. Eye level is the whole difference between a snapshot and a portrait.
If a smile arrives
If the first smiles are arriving, keep the phone within reach at the times of day when things are easy — usually after a feed, usually on a lap by the window. Do not stage it. Hold the camera low, keep talking, and take a burst so you catch the middle of it rather than the end.
Chin up off the blanket
Put a firm folded blanket on the floor in a bright spot and give the baby a few minutes on his front while you lie flat in front of him. Shoot from directly ahead, low enough that the blanket becomes a soft horizon. Add a favourite muslin in frame so you can tell the months apart later.
Cuffs turned back twice
Dress her in something slightly too big and photograph just the sleeve: the cuff folded over twice, the fist half swallowed by it. Do it against a plain lap or blanket with the window behind you. Clothes that do not fit yet are a size record you do not have to write down.
Over the shoulder
Stand behind a parent who is holding the baby upright against their shoulder, with the window facing them so the light rolls onto the little face. Frame tight enough to lose the room. The parent looks after the baby, you look after the picture.
Wrapped by the front door
Before an outing, photograph the whole bundle in the hallway: hat on, jacket zipped, a parent's arms holding it all together. Use the daylight coming through the open door and shoot from just far enough back to include the doorframe. Every month the same doorway makes the growth obvious.
Two months in the chair
Same chair, same spot on the floor, same time of day if you can manage it. Support him with the rolled towel again and take three frames, then stop. The point is not a perfect photo, it is the second dot on a line.
