Somewhere in month three the hands turn up, and once they do, they are in every frame. This is a good month for close, ordinary detail — a wet fist, a bath towel with a hood, a grandparent's shoulder. Keep the window on your left or right rather than behind the baby, and get lower than you think you need to.

Hands, discovered
When she is lying on her back studying her own fingers, kneel beside her with the window across from you and frame just the hands and the chin. Focus on the fingertips and let the face go soft behind them. Nobody needs to know it took eleven tries.
The soggy fist
Get in close on the fist that lives in the mouth: the shine on the knuckles, the drool on the chin, one eyebrow raised. Sit so the window is beside you and fill the frame with the head and hand only. It is not a flattering photo and it is completely accurate.
Under the play gym
Lie down beside the play mat and shoot along it rather than down at it, so the dangling toys hang across the top of the frame and the baby fills the bottom. If the mat sits in a dark corner, drag it toward the window first. The arch gives you a frame for free.
The bath towel hood
The hooded towel after a bath is the one costume you already own. Photograph him on a parent's shoulder in the bathroom doorway where the light is better, or on the bed, with just the wet fringe and flushed cheeks showing. Keep the frame tight so the bathroom clutter stays out.
Grandparent's shoulder
When family visits, get one photo of the baby asleep on somebody older, from the side, near a window. Include both faces and both sets of hands — the contrast in the skin is the picture. Take it early in the visit, before everyone remembers to tidy their hair.
Stroller nap, hood up
On a walk, stop and shoot down into the stroller with the hood making a soft tunnel around her face. Turn so your own shadow does not fall across the seat. Include one strap or buckle for scale, because next spring it will look impossibly small.
Three months in the chair
Same chair, same spot, less propping needed this time. Take one frame straight on and one from slightly to the side so you have a choice later. Then put the phone down.
