Month four is loud and physical in a lovely way. Things get reached for, gripped, and immediately eaten, and the sprawl of a sleeping four-month-old takes up twice the blanket it used to. Photograph the reaching rather than the toy, and keep the shutter going a beat longer than feels necessary.

The Sunday-nap sprawl
When he falls asleep in the middle of the living-room floor with both arms flung out, do not move him. Stand directly over the blanket and shoot straight down, including the edges of the blanket so the sprawl has something to measure against. Bare feet and a rumpled babygro are the whole point.
Reaching for the ring
Hold a wooden ring or a soft toy just above and to one side of her, at the edge of where the window light lands, and photograph the moment the hand closes around it. Get down level with her shoulder rather than shooting from above. The face doing the concentrating is better than the grab itself.
The big noise
There is a wide-open-mouth sound that arrives with no warning, usually aimed at a ceiling fan or a sibling. Sit close with the light on the face, keep the camera up, and take a burst rather than a single frame. Delete the nine that missed and keep the one that did not.
Halfway through a roll
If rolling is something that happens now, put him on a blanket in a clear bright patch of floor and lie down at the same level a metre away. Shoot side-on so the arch of the back shows. It is a rubbish photo from above and a lovely one from the side.
Bath, knees up
In the little tub, photograph from the foot end: knees up, hands slapping, wet hair standing straight. Open the bathroom door or curtain for whatever daylight you can get, and keep a towel on the floor so you can move around. Water and a phone want two adults in the room.
Drool on the collar
Photograph the dark wet patch on the front of the babygro, the bib that has given up, the chin that shines. It sounds like nothing and it ages beautifully. One close frame near a window, taken plainly, is enough.
Four months in the chair
Same chair, same spot. She may sit taller against the cushion now, so check that the top of the head is not clipping the top of the frame. One frame, then back to the floor.
