5 months old: photos worth taking.
By month five the feet have been found, and everything within arm's reach is being tested with the mouth. This is a busy, funny month to photograph, and the floor is your studio. Move the blanket into the brightest part of the room in the middle of the day and stay down there with him.
Month 5
Things worth photographing this month.
Toes in two hands
When she catches both feet at once, shoot from her side rather than from above, so you get the round of the belly and the grip on the toes in one line. Put the window behind you and keep the frame tight. A plain blanket underneath keeps the room out of it.
The taste test
Everything goes in the mouth this month: a muslin corner, a rubber giraffe, the strap of a car seat. Sit close, at eye level, and photograph the concentration rather than the object. One raised eyebrow makes the picture.
Propped on both elbows
On his front on a firm blanket, he may hold his chest up for a stretch. Lie flat in front of him with the camera almost on the floor and take a few as the head comes around toward you. Nothing else in the frame, just the blanket and the face.
Kicking on the big bed
Strip the bed back to a plain sheet, put the baby in the middle of it with the window on one side, and stand at the foot of the bed. The white sheet works like a giant reflector and the kicking gives you a hundred frames to choose from. One adult stays within arm's reach the whole time.
The good blanket, kicked off
The knitted blanket somebody made, half kicked to the end of the cot, with two feet sticking out of it. Shoot it plainly from above in soft daylight. In fifteen years that blanket is the thing people will recognise first.
The pet, at a safe distance
If there is a dog or a cat in the house, wait for the moment they lie down near the blanket and photograph both of them in one frame from floor level. Never stage a contact shot — just take the coexistence. An adult stays between them, out of frame.
Five months in the chair
Same chair, same spot, and now the arm of it looks noticeably shorter than she does. Take the frame, and while you are there take one of the empty chair too. It is a strange photo now and a very good one later.
When you have the photo
Turning this month into a keepsake.
The milestone photo maker works out the exact age from the photo's date so the label on the five-month frame is right, and the monthly photo collage maker turns the finished twelve into one print.
The milestone photo maker reads the birth date and the photo date, writes the exact age onto the picture, and lets you drag everything into place before downloading it for sharing or printing. The monthly photo collage maker holds twelve squares, one for each month of the year, and gives you a print-ready page at the end of it. All of them run in your browser, so the photos never leave your device.
Every photo, filed at the age it happened.
