The commando shuffle
If he is moving across the floor by any method at all, lie flat at the far end of the rug with the camera actually resting on the floor and let him come toward you. Keep the window behind him for a soft rim of light on the hair. Shoot as he arrives, not before.
A basket, emptied
Tip the toy basket out in a bright patch of floor and photograph from above as she works through it, so the mess spreads out like a map. Include her hands and one bare foot at the edge of the frame. The mess is the record; do not tidy it into a neat arc.
Peekaboo, blanket off
Have someone drop a muslin over the baby's head and pull it away while you sit low and close with the camera already up. Take a burst so you get the moment the face reappears. The photo you want is a quarter of a second long.
Bath toys and a wet fringe
In the bath, shoot from the side at water level with the door open for daylight, catching the wet hair plastered flat and one duck mid-air. Get the elbows and the rim of the tub in for scale. As always, one adult has hands on the baby and one has the phone.
Sibling on the floor
If there is an older child, photograph them both lying on the same rug rather than posed together on a sofa. Stand over them for one frame, then get down at their level for the better one. Let the older one be in charge of the entertainment.
The book that gets chewed
Board books are for eating this month. Photograph the corner of one in the mouth with a hand flat on the page, close in, near the lamp or the window. It is the most honest reading photo you will ever take.
Seven months in the chair
Same chair, same spot, though she may not want to stay in it. Put a favourite toy on the seat, take three quick frames, and accept whatever face turns up. The series is not a portrait sitting.
